  Historic District Remodel

These clients wanted to add a bit more room at the back of their home by enclosing an existing covered Porch. Later they wanted to change an area adjacent to the kitchen by creating a Bar, with a buffet and a Desk as a part of the same cabinetry. The ‘trick' is that the home is in an historic district of the city and they wanted the new work to replicate the existing detailing and 'feel' of the rest of the home.
Historic District Home Front of Existing Home

The original home was built at the turn of the (twentieth) century. A local architect designed the Porch enclosure; I designed the Bar area cabinetry. These were two separate projects, and done at different times. Most of this home had been remodeled and renovated before I arrived to start some of the more recent projects.

Porch Enclosure
The Porch enclosure had existing wood columns set on a low wall that supported the roof, and a sloped floor. This enclosed Porch area would become a part of the adjacent room. A partial wall was removed, the floor was leveled, the perimeter was framed in between the columns. Then custom-built wood windows and doors were installed. The windows have roll-up bronze screens hidden in their tops. There is approximately 800 lineal feet of custom-milled wood trim installed around the interior of this 140 square feet room. The interiors of the columns were painted by a local artist with a gold antique finish. The wood is all stained dark to match the rest of the home's interior. The exteriors were also finished in a way that matches the rest of the home. Insulation and electrical was installed in the room, within the existing walls, ceiling and floor systems that were left.

Bar, Buffet, Desk
The Bar area cabinetry was to match the other cabinetry throughout the home—some of it original, some of it built more recently. The wood used in the interior of this home is 'flat–grained' Douglas Fir—very hard to get today without having it custom milled. The Buffet cabinet is a slightly scaled down replica of the original buffet cabinet built on-site into the dining room. It has columns supporting the Hutch above, that match the existing style used extensively in this home, and leaded 'crackle' glass in the doors. The Bar's top is covered with a copper sheet, with a Cherry 'lean' rail at its front edge. There is a Desk surface to the left of the Buffet. A beadboard wainscot is installed around the perimeter of the large hallway in front of the Bar. The owners wanted to achieve a 'pub–like feel' to this area. Do you think we've accomplished this?

“We have worked with Bob Youngs on many projects over the course of more than five years. We own a vintage 1910 California craftsman home in an historic district in Santa Rosa. Our projects have included an extensive remodel of an existing music room and addition of an outside sun porch to create a new entertainment area. Another project transformed a non-descript corner of our kitchen into a pub-like, cozy wet bar.

It has been a distinct pleasure to work with Bob on all of our projects however big or small. This is what you can expect from Bob as your contractor: superb craftsmanship, creativity with design and problem solving, versatility (from plumbing and electric to top quality cabinetry and stained glass), accuracy (no re-working!), and cleanliness. All of these qualities add up to superb results.

We can recommend Bob with confidence and without hesitation.”
